Grand Floridian Spa & Health Club Closing

Grand Floridian Spa & Health Club
Back in March I made a post about my visit to the Grand Floridian Spa & Health Club and recommended that every take some time for a little pampering on their next vacation.  So the rumors I heard yesterday were a little shocking to me.

Early Friday morning I saw a tweet go by from a Travel Agent that I follow who was told that the Grand Floridian Resort's Spa would be closing for 20 months while construction went on around it.  I was immediately a little worried, because I had planned on helping out my Best Friend with a Bridal Party event at the Grand Floridian Spa the day before her wedding next June. At 7am I called the Grand Floridian Spa manager and left a message on her voice mail.

By 11am I was called back with some details.  The girl on the phone did confirm with me that the Spa, currently run by Niki Bryan Spas would be closing on September 19th, 2011.  She assumed that it was because of the construction that would be going on around them.  I asked her to confirm that the closure would be for twenty months, and she told me that she didn't know the time period because they "would not be coming back."  She said that she assumed that the Grand Floridian Resort would continue to have some sort of Spa facilities, however everything had happened very quickly just last week and they weren't given much information.

She asked if our bridal events were already scheduled and when they would take place.  I told her that no they were not scheduled yet and we were planning on coming in next June.  She then recommended that I give Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa a call to schedule my events at that Niki Bryan Spas location.

When I first saw pictures of the construction walls up on the Grand Floridian property at the Laughing Place (http://www.laughingplace.com/Lotion-View-1217.asp) I was a little concerned about it effecting the Spa experience.   Never in my life did I imagine that the spa would be closing for 20 months, nor that Niki Bryan Spas would not be coming back.  The construction going on around the area where the spa currently stands is rumored to be a new DVC addition to the Grand Floridian.  For those #DisneySMMoms reading who were at the dinner on the beach held by Disney Weddings in March, that lawn right across from the current Spa & Health Club building is partiall where the new construction will be happening.  According to the Orlando Sentinel "A permit application submitted to the South Florida Water Management District describes a six- to seven-story, T-shaped building that will be connected via a covered walkway to the existing Grand Floridian." Those permit plans can be found online here (http://my.sfwmd.gov/cmsdk/content/ifs/apps/RegDocFolder/ERPTechnical/110630-4app%23_plans92196.pdf)

Disney Vacation Club is keeping tight lipped about the construction, however that's not unusual as the Bay Lake Tower had been under construction for two years before they admitted that it was a new DVC property.  I must admit I will be first in line to snatch up DVC points at the Grand Floridian Resort if that is indeed what the construction happens to be.  However I hope whole heartedly that the plans going forward for the Resort continue to include a full service spa.

This post is part of the 27th Disney Blog Carnival.

UPDATE 8/9: Orlando's WESH has recently reported that Disney is saying this will be an 18 month closure.
